Erik Schatt's Bakery in downtown
Bishop is worthy of a stop!
|
This photo gallery supplements
our Eastern Sierras Itinerary including Mono Lake, Bodie State Park, a bit
of Lee Vining and Bishop. There is a brand new publication called
Motor Touring in
the Easter Sierra, Mono County, California with the whole book online.
It is quite well laid out and an exceptional resource. You can also
request a copy mailed to you to help in planning your trip. If you
are going to spend any time in this part of the Sierra Nevada, we highly
recommend this free guide.
| Check out the
all weather tires on this truck. Sort like a tank. Severe Snow
Tires! We stumbled upon this place one mile East of Tioga Pass at
Tioga Pass Resort. If you are driving by, their little 12 seater
restaurant looked like a great stop and the scents coming from the
kitchen were wonderful. |
 |
| This is the view
from the
swooping curve coming out of Tioga Pass and heading towards Lee Vining.
Unfortunately this camera just does not capture the drama of the
scene. The yellow aspens bring us over the pass each Fall for some new
photographs and a last getaway before the snow close the crossing. |
 |
| Heading north at
the intersection of 395 make time for a stop in Bodie State Park. The
detour will add at least an hour, perhaps 2-3 if you get on the
stamping mill tour. |
 |
| Bodie State Park
is maintained at a level defined as arrested decay. If a wall needs a
nail to keep the wall from falling down, it will get the nail, but
nothing else. It is at once eerie and I can imagine that if the
Twilight Zone was still in production, this would make a good setting
for several episodes. |
 |
| Smack-Dab in the
middle of no where. How ever did anyone find this place 150 years ago?
Today we take a right turn off of 395 and are soon on a dirt road for
12 miles. No trees, a few sheep...and then Bodie a town that used to
be hopping with gold and outlaws. |
 |
| Mono Lake rests
at the base of 120 where it intersects 395. This view is taken from
the oft recommended Whoa Nelli Deli inside the gas station just before
395. Stop for a treat. |
 |
| This is down at
the lake level of Mono Lake. Make a stop at the visitors center, then
take a bit of a walk along the shore. |
 |
| Lunaresque is a
word I might have made up, but perfectly describes the landscape of
the Mono Lake basin. |

 |
| This is 395
heading South from Lee Vining towards June Lake and Mammoth Lakes.
Open Sky, huge vistas and a really straight road. |
 |
| There are many
hot springs in this area. My friend Patrick and I took 3 years of
summer weekends to find a few and have long since forgotten where they
are. Victor and I sort of look when we are over the hill, but we seem
to be in a bigger hurry these days. |
