Because we are located midway between the river's put in and take out points, Hotel Charlotte is a great Tuolumne river rafting hotel choice. The Tuolumne river is designated a wild and scenic river and offers class lV+ white water rapids through the spring and Class lV in the summer. Cherry Creek, a northern fork to the Tuolumne runs Class V White water rapids and is for the experienced rafters. Most of the outfitters have departures on either river. Tuolumne trips can be from 1-3 days and Cherry a single day.

Columbia State Historic Park is a living, restored gold rush town. It never closes. The concessions and businesses in the park close on Thanksgiving and Christmas days, they are open for every other holiday, weather permitting. The Gold Rush to Columbia, California began on March 27, 1850 by a small party of prospectors. News of the discovery spread and they were soon joined by a flood of miners. Unlike many settlements that have changed with the times, Columbia, California seems to be frozen in the 1800's. Today, Columbia State Historic Park is the best preserved of California gold rush towns.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, in a valley known more for cattle ranching than vineyards our story begins. It was the Winter of 1999 when Frog's Tooth Vineyards began its life as a tadpole with the purchase of 67 acres of land in the Salt Springs Valley of Calaveras County. It slowly grew through infancy until the Spring of 2003 when it began its transition to adolescence with the planting of approximately 10 acres of premium wine grapes. Frog's Tooth Vineyards entered young froghood in 2005 when we crushed fruit for what would become our first vintage wine. Rich and Siri Gilpin are the owners and operators of Lavender Ridge Vineyard. Rich has a BS degree in Enology from the University of Davis, CA. He has 25 years of experience in the wine industry and comes from a background of making wine for reputable wineries in Healdsburg, Napa, and the Sierra Foothill regions of California. Rich and Siri both have a passion for organic farming and the use of herbs in the culinary arts, including the use of lavender in special dishes they have created. Black Sheep Winery arrived in Murphys with the 1984 harvest. Our founders Janis and David Olson crushed their first Zinfandel, with assistance from current owner and winemaker, Steve Millier. For over two decades Four Winds Cellars has been sourcing fruit from Gerber Vineyards. Amador Cellars is a unique winery in the heart of the lush Shenandoah Valley. Built in 2003 of rice straw and concrete, the winery and tasting room boast an Old World-style design and architecture emphasizing simplicity, utility and function. They sit on a knoll overlooking rolling vineyards in the shade of a stand of Valley Oak – a perfect spot for enjoying a picnic, fine wine and beautiful views. The winery and tasting room are open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Cooper family’s passion for growing superior grapes reflects their belief that winemaking begins in the vineyard. The family’s grapegrowing acumen is manifested in their exciting portfolio of award-winning wines.

This small family winery, operated by Milan and Victoria Matulich, produces classically big, rich Amador County wines. A long, winding road leads to its secluded old homestead, where visitors can picnic, savor the winery’s robust estate zinfandel, syrah, sangiovese and viognier, or just listen to the birds.

Karmere (Car-MARE) is a family-owned and operated winery producing some of Amador's boldest red wines. Evoking a French chateau, the tasting room overlooks the winery – which resembles an old church, complete with bell towers – and carefully groomed, Shenandoah Valley estate vineyards, which are planted to barbera, syrah, zinfandel and nebbiolo. Visitors to the tasting room can enjoy Karmere’s gardens and picnic area, which afford wonderful views of the surrounding valley.

Founded in 1856, this Registered Historic Landmark is among the oldest wineries in California. Resurrected in the 1990s by the Sobon family, who pioneered organic grape growing and the planting of Rhône varietals in the Sierra foothills, Sobon Estate is dedicated to making outstanding zinfandels that express the true character of the vineyards for which they’re named. The winery is also the site of the Shenandoah Valley Museum of early agriculture and winemaking, and boasts one of the prettiest picnic areas in Amador County.

Established in 1987, this small, family winery renowned for its premium sangiovese wines has been a pioneer in the renaissance of that noble Tuscan varietal. Noceto crafts a distinctive, fruity, Chianti-style sangiovese that complements a wide range of foods and offers fine value to the consumer. The winery also makes Frivolo, a light, lively moscato bianco, plus small quantities of zinfandel, barbera and grappa. Picnic facilities are available, as are tours by appointment.

This renowned winery makes highly-regarded artisan wines from Amador and other Sierra Foothills-region grapes. The Terre Rouge label focuses on classic Rhône varieties while the Easton label specializes in traditional California varietals. Jim Laube of Wine Spectator magazine, in his book California Wine, selected Terre Rouge/Easton as his top-rated Sierra Foothill winery. Sacramento Magazine has called its tasting room staff “the friendliest” in the region.

Billing itself as a “Mecca of Zinfandelegance," C.G. DiArie produces small lots of bold, elegant, award-winning wines reflecting an impressive blend of craftsmanship, innovation and cutting-edge technology. An example is the highly regarded Southern Exposure Zinfandel, made from Amador’s “Original Grandpere Vineyard," which contains the oldest Zinfandel vines in the U.S. The C.G. DiArie tasting room offers a peaceful, romantic ambience, with guests welcomed to picnic under the oaks or meditate by the Koi Pond and waterfall. A VIP tasting room is available by appointment.

Experience Jamestown A walk down Main Street in Historic Jamestown is a step back in time. You'll see a mixture of buildings from different eras. Wooden buildings dating from the winding down of the Gold Rush. Stone buildings with iron shutters from about the same time designed to withstand the fires that were common at that time. Wooden buildings in the Victorian style from the turn into the 20th century. You can dine at the Willow Steak House (established 1864), where the builders of the Sierra Railway once hung out in the bar. You can have lunch or ice cream at Here's the Scoop, with its old-style decor including a bar that came from a historic San Francisco saloon. There are gift shops and antique and collectible stores, with many items made locally. In the small Victorian-era park there is the Jamestown Branch Jail, built in 1898 and very recently moved back to Jamestown and restored (See photo below). Several historic hotels can be found along the street, including the Royal Carriage Inn, the National Hotel, and the Jamestown Hotel. A variety of restaurants can be found downtown, including traditional food, Mexican, Italian, Chinese, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, ice cream, and expresso.

Bear Valley lies in the heart of the Central Sierra between the Mokelumne and Carson Iceberg Wilderness Areas. As the current owners, the Helm family has owned and operated Dodge Ridge for the last 37 years of the resort’s 62 year history. Over the last 37 years the Helm family has dedicated themselves to the continued growth of Dodge Ridge. The resort as it stands today is a direct result of their commitment to continual growth. They have achieved this through many large scale investments in the resort. The most notable expansions began with the installment of chairlifts 7 in 1985 and chair 8 in 1998, which subsequently tripled the skiable acreage available to Dodge Ridge skiers + riders. As a part of their commitment to continual growth, the Helm family created the 15 year Master Development Plan. Stage 1 of this plan was completed in 2007 with the $6 million base area expansion which included the addition of the 16,000 sq. ft. Family Lodge. The Family Lodge is home to the newly expanded Children’s Snowsports Center, tickets sales and guest services center, day use lockers and the North Fork Bistro. The most recent expansion is the doppelmayar T-Bar T643 installed in the summer of 2011. T-Bar 643 gains access to the second summit, doubling the length of the shots. Future expansions to Dodge Ridge include a complete chairlift infrastructure upgrade with the addition of the second summit chairlift and a high speed detachable lift connecting the lower mountain to the summit with a vertical rise of over 1,400 ft. We have three stables within the park boundaries, each offering unique scenery and a memorable experience. Visit one, or all three, to see more of the park. Welcome to Don Pedro Lake - a recreational gem in the Sierra Nevada foothills of the Stanislaus National Forest, near the communities of Moccasin and La Grange, and bordering the northwestern corner of Yosemite National Park. Here you'll find nearly 160 miles of shoreline, excellent fishing and seemingly endless opportunity for water sports and fun. Don Pedro Lake is actually the 5th largest man-made lake in California with over 2.3 million acre feet of water. Surrounded by rolling hills and oak trees, this beautiful reservoir is situated in a canyon carved out by the Tuolumne river. Several tributaries drain directly into Don Pedro Lake allowing the water levels to remain high and the comfortably warm summer water temperatures. Fishing on Don Pedro Lake is available year-round with excellent opportunities for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, bluegill and even catfish. Smallmouth bass are found throughout the lake on rocky points and islands and Don Pedro Lake is also known for producing large numbers of salmon.
