As one approaches this tiny hamlet town of Groveland, on the way to Yosemite, it might be that with a quick blink you are past....Don't blink! Groveland is full of wonderful things to do and places to eat, whether you are Yosemite bound or just out for a road trip. This quaint gold mining village poised at the edge of the Sierra is quick becoming a diner's Mecca for quality selections spanning a myriad of styles from the fast and affordable to extraordinary and posh.
------------------------------------------- As you peak The Grade coming from the west on Highway 120, your first chance for a vision is the recently reopened Priest Station Cafe, most famous for its burgers, but also offering classical German dinners one night a week. Open 7 days a week in season for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Next up is Big Oak Lounge, open for breakfast, lunch and diner. This bar with restaurant has recently installed a balanced wine list with an entry level choice, nice mid-priced wine and a great higher-end wine in both reds and whites. The regular menu features a broad selection of favorites including some delicious New York steaks. Entering Groveland on your right is the new Pizza Factory. This stop has been known to have the latest serving hours in town and is a good bet for your post dinner hour muchies! Just North of Main Street (turn at the Jail house) is Cross Country Cafe on Ponderosa Lane. Very good fresh made sandwiches, soups, traditional salads, and pasta/potato salads. Great choice for breakfast and then order a sandwich to take into the park with you. 209-962-7777 Just off Main Street in downtown Groveland there is the very seasonal Stan's Que on Back Street. Stan specializes in smoked meats, and his custom bbq sauce is truly one-of-a-kind. Stan and Pam offer outdoor seating only and are usually open May through October weather permitting, 209.962.7529. Directly across from Stan's, but on Main Street is Cocina Michoacana, the popular Mexican restaurant doing an authentic job of feeding travelers seven days a week, lunch and dinner. The green sauce is by far the best we have had north of the border, try the enchiladas. Next to us is Dori's Teahouse with 57 blends of teas and traditional tea fare. Delicious and a charming tea inspired gift shop too. Dori's serves a traditional tea lunch and is a very pleasant location to spend a happy hour with a glass of wine and appetizers on her tiny patio. The Iron Door Saloon is a favorite amongst regular two-wheeled travelers to Groveland. The eclectic saloon boasts of being the oldest continuously operating saloon in California and the aged woodwork and huge iron doors are testament to this. Once famous for their buffalo burgers, guests can now also enjoy such California styled treats as chicken Caesar rollups and a selection of Chineese treats. The Iron Door Saloon is absolutely worth a stop, hungry or not! 209.962.8904. For the historians at heart, there is the Cellar Door located in one of the oldest buildings in town, the Groveland Hotel. The hushed dining room provides peace and romance for a lovely dinner for two and is the perfect spot for very special events. The gourmet menu pairs well with their Wine Spectator Award wining wine list. 209.962.4000. Continue heading east and at the corner of Feretti Road you will find P.J.'s s diner. We very much enjoy their soft-serve ice-cream cones on the hottest days of August, 209.962.7501. Just around the corner, on Feretti Road is Two Guys Pizza Pies serving up all-you-can-eat weekday lunch pizza and salad bar specials that can't be beat! Two Guys also does delivery, 209-962-GUYS. Pine Mountain Lake, a private community just around the corner from Groveland, has a Country Club Grill that is open to the public. Capable of seating up to 200 people, the Country Club is always the choice for big venued events. While perhaps better known for their dinners, their greatest asset is the Yosemite peaked views. With this in mind, we suggest a lingering lunch on the deck where you can enjoy both the views above and the golfers below. 209.962.8636. Returning to Highway 120 and heading East 12 miles you will come to an widening aournd the road called Buck Meadows. Wave at our friends off Hamilton Station Road at Blackberry Inn, but consider a stop at Yosemite Ridge, 49er Restaurant where they serve up traditional diner fare with a Hollywood flare, located just East of the Motel. 209-962-6788 Evergreen Lodge is a tucked away gem. You will never find this place by accident. Located 8 miles off of Highway 120 and nearly at the Hetch Hetchy entrance to Yosemite, visitors here will find a lodge setting reminiscent of the movie Dirty Dancing with campfires and s'mores nightly. The main log cabin building holds a good sized restaurant and bar and serves both a gourmet menu and a casual menu of burgers and such. The setting is great fun with an occasional live band on weekends and the food is tasty. 209.379.2606. The value and diversity of choice you will receive while dining in a Groveland restaurant far exceeds the pricing you will find once inside Yosemite National Park. We hope you will stop in Groveland while on your way to Yosemite for a bit, a bite or an overnight! |
